Michelin Restaurants in Gothenburg: A Food Traveller's Guide
Gothenburg's Michelin-starred restaurants, from two-star Signum by the lake to the city's one-star dining rooms, with sourced prices and booking notes.
Gothenburg, Sweden · 6 min read

Copenhagen and Stockholm get most of the attention, but for a first Stars & Stalls guide we wanted somewhere a little quieter, where a weekend of very good eating doesn't mean a scramble for tables. Gothenburg, on Sweden's west coast, suits that well. The MICHELIN Guide's selection in and around the city includes a two-star restaurant just outside town, a group of one-star dining rooms, a Bib Gourmand and several more restaurants listed in the Guide. What ties a lot of them together, on their own telling, is the coast: fish, shellfish and the produce of western Sweden.
Below are the restaurants we'd plan a trip around. Last checked 16 Oct 2026. All distinctions are as shown on each restaurant's page at guide.michelin.com on that date. Prices, opening times and booking terms come from each restaurant's own website and were correct on the same date. Menus and prices change, so check the restaurant's site before you book.
The two-star day out: Signum
Distinction: Two MICHELIN Stars (MICHELIN Guide)
Signum is technically in Mölnlycke, not Gothenburg, but it's the one for a special occasion. Michelin describes an old manor house on the shores of Landvettersjön lake, with the restaurant in a boathouse-style annexe of Hällsnäs Hotell. The restaurant says its menu follows the Nordic season and centres on fish and shellfish, with produce from the vegetable garden, the farm and the Swedish wild. Main ingredients come exclusively from Scandinavia.
The menu: a single menu of around 18 servings, at 3,500 kr. Drinks pairings are 1,000 kr (alcohol-free), 1,600 kr (combo), 2,000 kr (standard drinks menu), 2,600 kr (exclusive combo) and 4,000 kr (exclusive) (menu page).
When: Tuesday to Friday from 18.00, and Saturday from 12.00. The Saturday lunch is the same roughly 18-course format as dinner (booking page). If you're flying home on Sunday, a Saturday lunch here is worth considering.
Booking: you give card details when you book. If you don't turn up, you're charged 1,500 kr per person. Cancellation is free up to seven days before. When a date is full there's a waiting list, and the site also has a link for booking accommodation. See the booking page and the reservations email listed there.
Gothenburg's one-star restaurants
Koka
Distinction: One MICHELIN Star (MICHELIN Guide)
Michelin describes an elegant, airy room beneath an ornate 19th-century glass ceiling, with light wood panelling and bespoke furniture. On its own site, Koka calls its cooking "modern West Swedish gastronomy". It works mainly with local growers and fishermen, and with mushroom and oyster pickers, and says it has chosen to cut back on meat. It says organic produce makes up around 90% of what it uses (menu PDF).
The menu: the current menu has two choices. The full Koka menu is 1,295 kr, with a 995 kr wine menu. The shorter Farmers Menu (Odlarmenyn) is 995 kr, with a 775 kr wine menu. Both open with snacks and end with something small and sweet, and both also come in a vegetarian version at the same price.
When: Monday to Thursday from 18.00, Friday and Saturday from 17.00, closed on Sundays (website).
Booking: online through the "Boka bord" link on the website.
Project
Distinction: One MICHELIN Star (MICHELIN Guide)
UK readers may like the backstory. Project was opened in late summer 2016 by husband-and-wife Cameron and Anna Irving, who say they spent many years working in London and around Europe beforehand. They describe it as a place to feel at home, with a neighbourhood bar as well as the dining room. Michelin calls it cosy and singles out the team for looking after guests well.
The menu: the signature menu is 1,595 SEK. Wine pairing is 1,100 SEK and the alcohol-free pairing 750 SEK. The small tasting menu is 1,095 SEK, with pairings at 550 SEK (wine) or 395 SEK (alcohol-free). If you just drop in for a glass in the bar, the restaurant says you can order dishes separately.
When: Tuesday to Saturday from 17.00, closed Sunday and Monday (website).
Booking: online booking closes two hours before opening. Groups of more than six should email. If online shows full, the restaurant says to phone, because there may still be space. It's a small room and can't take prams, buggies or highchairs (booking page).
SK Mat & Människor
Distinction: One MICHELIN Star (MICHELIN Guide)
Michelin calls this a minimalist room where the architecture and the food are the focus. The restaurant's own description is a kitchen with no walls, in the middle of the dining room, where chefs sometimes bring your plate to the table themselves. The food builds on Swedish culinary tradition and produce from nearby.
The menu: SK Mat offers both à la carte and set menus. When we checked on 16 October 2026, the menu page listed a four-course tasting menu at 940 kr per person (allow at least two hours) and a six-course menu at 1,255 kr (allow at least two and a half hours). Wine packages for four courses were 675 kr standard or 1,120 kr premium, and for six courses 895 kr or 1,595 kr. The dishes are seasonal, so expect the menu to change.
When: Monday to Saturday from 17.00 (website).
Booking: online, with email confirmation (website).
28+
Distinction: One MICHELIN Star (MICHELIN Guide)
For a sense of the city's dining history, Michelin notes that 28+ has been run passionately since 1985 and sits in a historic building. The restaurant says it works mainly with seasonal, local produce and updates its seasonal menu every four to six weeks, and that in 2026 it kept its Michelin star for the 36th year in a row.
The menu: the website offers small and large tasting menus, à la carte, and group menus for six or more (ordered in advance, Tuesday to Friday only). When we checked, the small tasting menu was 1,295 SEK, with a wine menu for 795 SEK more or an exclusive wine menu for 1,595 SEK more. Check the site for the other menus' prices.
When: Tuesday to Saturday evenings (website).
Booking: through the "Book" button on the website, or by phone or email as listed there.
Good value: Familjen
Distinction: Bib Gourmand (MICHELIN Guide)
You'll want at least one evening that isn't a tasting menu, and Familjen fits. Michelin highlights friendly, down-to-earth service and a laid-back atmosphere in an elegant residential neighbourhood. The restaurant describes itself as an extended living room serving modern food from the west coast.
When: Monday to Thursday 17.00–23.00, and Friday and Saturday from 17.00 until late (website).
Booking: online via the "Boka Bord" page on the website.
Also in the Guide
Several more Gothenburg restaurants are listed in the MICHELIN Guide:
- Bhoga, near one of the city's canals. Michelin notes it has reopened after a 20-month closure for city groundworks (MICHELIN Guide).
- Restaurant Vrå, which takes a Nordic-Japanese approach in the former central hall of the 1920s city post office, now the Clarion Hotel Post, where the listed cashier booths are still on display (MICHELIN Guide).
- Human, on a quiet residential street behind the 17th-century Skansen Kronan fortress (MICHELIN Guide).

Planning your trip
Plan your days around closing days. Koka and SK Mat are closed on Sundays, and Project on Sundays and Mondays. Signum and 28+ serve from Tuesday to Saturday only. So Tuesday to Saturday gives you the most choice, and Sunday needs a back-up plan.
Combining the restaurants. A sensible long weekend could be Signum for Saturday lunch, one starred city restaurant on Friday night, and Familjen or one of the other listed restaurants on another evening. Signum's lunch is a full 18-course meal, so don't plan a big dinner the same day.
Know the booking terms. Signum takes card details and charges for no-shows, with free cancellation up to seven days before (booking terms). Project's online booking closes two hours before service (booking page). For other restaurants, read the terms on their booking page before you confirm.
Money. Prices are in Swedish kronor. Every price above comes from the restaurant's own site, so check against your bank's exchange rate on the day you travel.
Dietary needs. Restaurants deal with these differently, and some can only adapt menus with notice. Contact the restaurant directly before you book rather than relying on a guide like this one.
Gothenburg doesn't try to compete with the capitals, and that's part of why it works. You can get a two-star lakeside lunch, a handful of very good city dining rooms and a relaxed Bib Gourmand dinner without the struggle to book that you'd face in bigger cities.
